Class Plan:

Adam Fisher (“Coraline”, “Kubo and the Two Strings”) will lead students through the basics of stop-motion animation using simple puppets, toys and found objects. We will discuss the setup and tools, then utilize easily accessible software to create simple and short animations. Students will leave with the know-how to continue creating animation on their own at home.

Section 1 of the class is for smaller children (ages 7-11). We will begin by talking about what animation is and how it works. We will then collaborate on a short story idea that incorporates specific toys we have on hand. Adam will operate the camera and help the kids as they bring the story and characters to life through stop-motion animation. Parents must be present for this class.

Adam’s approach is fun, low-pressure and aims to inspire people to create. Animation typically takes a long time, so the goal of this class is to introduce students to tools and techniques that will allow them to continue to animate and tell their stories on their own at a very low cost.

Adam Fisher is an Associate Professor and Program Chair of Animation and Game Art at Maine College of Art & Design. Adam received his MFA in Animation with a focus on character animation in stop-motion and CG from Rochester Institute of Technology; he earned a BA in Film Studies at Wesleyan University. Adam came to MECA&D with a wealth of experience, including having worked on seven feature films, six of which were nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Film category, as well as on an Emmy-award-winning television series (Tumble Leaf, Season 1), several commercials, and many personal projects. More recently, he worked on Missing Link, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2019 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Community Program Registration

Monson Arts is committed to providing creative experiences for our local community. These programs vary in materials, methods and experience required. Offerings will be one or two day programs. Accommodations are not provided for these programs.

Enrollment in each program is handled on a first-come, first-served basis and will be available until the program is full. If a workshop is full, you can contact our office to be placed on the waitlist free of charge. If space becomes available, we will let you know.

Anyone participating in a Monson Arts workshop in 2022 will be required to show proof that they are up to date with COVID19 vaccinations before the start of their workshop session.

Fees

The cost of participating in community programs will vary depending on materials provided. Some programs may request that you bring certain inspiration or specific items to the program. Fees will offset provided materials. Payment in full is due at the time of registration.

Cancellation Policy

We understand the difficulties of planning to participate in a workshop program during the pandemic and have adjusted our cancellation policy to allow for maximum flexibility. If at any point you need to cancel due to illness, risk, or restriction we will make a full refund of your program payment. If we decide that it is not possible to safely operate and cancel or postpone a workshop, you will be notified and receive a full refund.
