Book Arts: Erin Sweeney

June 30-July 5

Book Arts Bonanza – This workshop will focus on both folded and sewn book structures. Students will learn multiple book structures during the week—such as the Dos-a-Dos and one-needle Coptic binding, for example—and then will combine these techniques to get something entirely new: a Coptic bound Dos-a-Dos that just keeps on going! These structures can be used as building blocks for other work, be it participatory or collaborative, sculptural, or simply stand-alone.  Simple printmaking techniques and writing prompts will be used to generate content for the structures. All levels welcome.

Erin Sweeney lives and works in southern New Hampshire, where she is chair of foundations at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. She also teaches workshops at her Lovely in the Home Press and has taught workshops at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Stone House, the University of Southern Maine’s Book Arts Intensive; Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Cló Ceardlann in Donegal, Ireland. She received her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and a BFA in Sculpture from the Maine College of Art. She can also drive a backhoe, rake gravel for extended periods of time, and install septic pipe.
