Collagraph Workshop with Goody Pixley

June 21 – June 27

Collagraph Workshop with Goody Pixley

Experience Level: All Levels

Printmaking as a Form of Upcycling.

In this collagraph workshop we will explore the art of making prints with found materials and acrylic mediums. Collagraph (collaged plate making) live in the expressive space between the fun materials exploration of Monotype and the moody editioning potential of Etching, and dry point (batching multiples of the same print).

Students will be encouraged to forage for supplies out in the world and consider the materiality of everyday items like, recycling, plant samples, clothing and textiles.

We will then discuss and explore ways to elevate and render those materials to tap into the visual vocabulary of those objects. For instance – What could happen in you could print lace, a pressed flower, or a bit of packaging, and what levels of expressive meaning can we imbibe those objects through our manipulation of those materials?

Once prints are made, we will also explore techniques that allow for the artist to work back into them.  Options include but are not limited to: more collage, dry media like pastels, and colored pencils , as well as wet media, such as watercolor and acrylic.

Provided Materials:

  • All purpose mixed media paper
  • Ink
  • Etching Press
  • A limited supply of general supplies, such as rulers, scissors, glue, Matte Medium, Mod Podge and cutting mat. It would be helpful if students have these items for them to bring their kit, though not necessary should someone be traveling or just starting out.
  • Consumable paper.
  • Rags

What to bring:

  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • A cutting razor knife such as a small break away knife, box cutter, and/or Exacto knife.
  • Higher quality paper for experienced students who prefer them. Cotton Rag is recommended.
  • Pocket knife
  • Apron
  • Foraged materials, any thing really, if it can be made flat-ish or squished into place.

Optional Items:

  • Good fitting Gloves like nitrile or rubber cleaning gloves.  (We will be working with non-toxic inks, however they will dye skin and some people are more sensitive than others.)
  • Any random printing/painting material I haven’t mentioned you would like to try out with this process. For instance: Gelli Plates, Heavy Gell mediums or Akua modifiers and accessories.
  • Optional: Baby wipes. It’s and inky/sticky process, and they help with workflow, BUT  good old fashioned soap and water also works fine.
  • Preferred Drawing or painting supplies if the student has them.  (oils discouraged as we can not accommodate some issue associated with them in this studio. They are however encouraged for further exploration at home.)
