Mosaics in the Indirect Method
Experience: all levels experience
Medium: all/any mosaic materials including vitreous glass, stained glass, broken ceramics, miscellaneous materials, technique is indirect on sticky mesh
Mosaics are an ancient art form dating back more than 2000 years and currently undergoing a contemporary renaissance. In this week long workshop the focus is on one-on-one guidance, direction and support. I will introduce the medium to newcomers and have instruction for experienced students in all aspects of design, color, shape and andamento, or ‘flow’ of how mosaic tesserae are placed. Students can work on 1 large mosaic or several smaller works; one can choose to work abstractly or representationally, the medium is rich in opportunity. We work in the indirect method, all steps and variations will be taught with trowel skills emphasized. I have 25 years of experience in mosaic and I am happy to share all I have learned along the way from mosaic design to problem solving technical issues unique to the art-form. I encourage all interested and/or enrolled students to contact me in advance to discuss via email or phone individual goals for the workshop
BIO
I have been a professional artist for over 35 years with a focus on mosaics since 2000. I began my art career as an editorial and children’s book illustrator, metamorphosing to full time mosaic artist over several years. At my Big Bang Mosaics studio in rural western Massachusetts I create installations for public, residential, and corporate settings from hospital walls to town commons, performing arts centers, museums, fountains and splash-pads. My diverse body of work ranges from illustrative to painterly to non-representational. I handle all aspects of their creation, from sketching to mosaic fabrication and installation. I do school residencies and community projects here in the US and have been going to Guatemala since 2013 creating murals in the community of San Lucas Tolimán. I teach at craft centers and in my studio and always find time to create my own work including my current series, “On Being Human, An Artist’s Journey”.
Simply put, mosaics are my passion.
